TOURIST TRAP

Every city’s got them

VOL 1 – EUREKA SKYDECK

Melbourne can be a good-looking city from up high, especially this high. So yes, the view is good, and perhaps you could almost say it’s worth visiting. The horrendous signage on the outside of the building is an ominous sign, though, that the Skydeck is more tourist than tasteful in its design and execution. Up on the 88th floor, sound effects of howling winds blow through speakers, while banal facts such as “Cate Blanchett was born in Melbourne” scroll along walls and across floors in coloured LEDs, which, almost amusingly, reflect in the windows at dusk and hinder the view – you know, the view which brought you up there in the first place.
